There has been a lot of chat that the second Anthology film, currently set to be released in 2018, will be an origin story for one of the most famous Star Wars characters: Boba Fett. The Wrap and other online sources seem to now be convinced that Boba Fett is indeed what the film will be about, although there have been no official confirmations from Disney or Lucasfilm. Josh Trank, director of Chronicle and the upcoming Fantastic Four, bowed out of the project recently, also cancelling an announced visit to Star Wars Celebration. He was supposed to host a panel together with Gareth Edwards, who is directing Anthology #1 film Rogue One.
Boba Fett is a clone of Jango Fett, the bounty-hunter from whom the army of the Republic was cloned from in The Attack of the Clones. Jango requested an unaltered clone for himself, raising him as his own son until his own, unfortunate, Mace Windu-induced death. Boba takes over from his father, becoming a bounty hunter himself and returning Han Solo, cryogenically frozen and all, to Jabba the Hutt in The Empire Strikes Back. Although he wears a Mandalorian armour, it is not entirely certain Boba actually is Mandalorian since Jango was adopted by Mandalorian warriors after his parents death.
It will be interesting to see Boba’s life explored more, although between him appearing in The Attack of the Clones, The Clone Wars and the last two Original Trilogy films, Boba is quite a recurring feature. However, Star Wars Always has some amazing concept art which was made for the unfinished 1313 video game. It would have focused on Boba’s adventures on Level 1313, a subterranean city on Coruscant. The concept art looks very different from the “standard” Star Wars look and we think the Anthology films are a great chance for Lucasfilm and Disney to explore different film genres while telling more stories from the Star Wars-universe.
Do you want to see a Boba Fett stand-alone film? And are you hoping for a similarly gritty look like Rogue One seems to be going for?
